Adopting kittens

Adopting kittens from Chestnut Cat Sanctuary in EssexWe get a lot of enquiries from people asking for kittens, and asking why we don't normally advertise them on our website. Here's why:

  • We have so many coming in during kitten season (normally from April through to the end of November) that normally it just isn't practical to advertise them as individuals.

  • When they're really small, a photo of a litter feeding from their mum wouldn't really tell you very much - it would just be a big ball of wriggling fur!

So yes, we often have kittens available - but you'll need to visit us to see them.  And remember, that even when we do post pictures on this site, the chances are it'll be a different collection of kittens actually available by the time you get in touch. All in all it's best to contact us first.

What you need to know about kittens for adoption
By kittens we mean baby cats between 8 weeks and 4 months of age.

  • We RARELY home kittens on their own. Kittens prefer a playmate and would be distressed if they were taken away from their littermates and their mum at such a young age. You wouldn't do it to a toddler - and we won't do it to them! This means kittens are almost always adopted from us in pairs.
  • If a mum has an odd number of kittens we will often pair the last one with its mum, or with a kitten remaining from another litter.
  • Even when we get a single kitten coming to us for rehoming - even at a few months old - we're likely to pair it with another cat of similar age.
  • If you are looking for a single kitten because you already have a very young cat/kitten, we may occasionally have one we will consider homing on its own.
  • 8 weeks old is the youngest age at which we'll consider letting a kitten go to a new home. You can reserve a kitten at 5 weeks old (and visit them every week), before taking them home at 8 weeks of age.

Donations to adopt kittens
To adopt a kitten you have to make a donation of £125 (per kitten - special breeds and colours may be more). But this is extremely good value, because your donation includes:

  • Neutering, at 6 months old (typical cost at a Vet would be £60+)
  • Microchipping at 15 weeks old (about £25 at a Vet)
  • Vaccinations at 12 & 15 weeks (Vet value £40/£45)
  • And 6 weeks free Pet Plan insurance!

A pet shop kitten can sell at £150, on top of which you have to add these essential Vet services. So it makes financial sense to adopt from us.

More importantly, though, our kittens are usually in much better condition, physically and psychologically: we've provided excellent care, monitored their progress and only allow them to go to a new home when they're healthy, eating solids, and litter trained.
